Two million Americans will be diagnosed with cancer this year. Cancer screening could literally save your life! Check out our Dr. Connor’s latest article.
The drug industry is abuzz about the State of Florida’s recent approval from the FDA to bulk import Canadian drugs. Americans who buy medications from Canada by mail-order for personal use should be concerned about this development.
“‘The likelihood of this [saving money through bulk Canadian drug importation] actually materializing is negligible,’” according to Eric Miller, a Washington-based trade consultant, who was recently quoted in a recent Politico article, “The FDA just cleared the way for drug importation. What now?”. The views of the experts in this article appear to echo our own past newsletters on this very topic and we juxtapose them below.
“… has prompted Canada’s Federal Minister of Health to warn Americans that he will prohibit bulk exports of medications using regulations that are already enacted.”
Mr. Miller tells Politico that “‘[d]rug companies have indicated they won’t provide extra cushion [additional supplies] to the products designated for the smaller Canadian market … leaving the country with little wiggle room to export.’” Also according to Politico, “[t]he Canadian government has long opposed U.S. efforts to import cheaper drugs from its country. A nation with a population about one-tenth the size of the U.S.’ can’t meet Americans’ prescription drug demand without risking its own supply, officials have argued.” The former FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb is even cited by Politico to say that, “‘Canada has made it impossible for this policy to be implemented … [n]o wholesaler in their legitimate supply chain can ship to the U.S.’”
“… bulk exports of drugs to Florida raises the spectre of Canadian officials sliding down the slippery slope of banning not just wholesale but all exports of medications from Canada …”
In fact, Florida’s FDA approval is sparking fear and panic amongst the Canadian populace that the State of Florida will drain Canada’s supply of medication which has prompted Canada’s Federal Minister of Health to warn Americans that he will prohibit bulk exports of medications using regulations that are already enacted.
The following excerpt from our 2021 newsletter, “Wholesale Importation of Canadian Drugs: Real Savings for Americans or Just More Politics?”, mirrored these same concerns:
Canadian drug wholesalers have confirmed they won’t bulk ship Canadian drugs to American wholesalers or pharmacies and simply won’t participate in these schemes while the Canadian government has already stated that they will block the export of these drugs. This should be of little surprise as nobody can truly expect Big Pharma companies to ramp up Canada’s prescription drugs supply only to have these lower priced drugs sold back to Americans for less than the current U.S. prices, especially when Big Pharma has and has and continues to actively frustrate the supply of Canadian drugs by Canadian pharmacies to Americans, as widely reported in the media in the past and as directly experienced by us to this very day.
Canadian government efforts to thwart bulk exports of drugs to Florida raises the spectre of Canadian officials sliding down the slippery slope of banning not just wholesale but all exports of medications from Canada, including the mail-order export of personal supply medications being ordered by Americans just like you, even though such purchases for personal supply have never caused a shortage of drugs in Canada.
“‘… this is Florida getting to say they [are] doing something to help with high prices, but when it inevitably doesn’t work, they can blame others’”.
Our December 2022 newsletter, “Colorado’s Latest Canadian Drug Importation Moves Could Risk the Access to Cheaper Drugs that Americans Already Have”, cited executive director of the Campaign for Personal Prescription Importation, Jack Pfeiffer, to warn that “it is through a prohibition on exports of drugs by the Government of Canada or a reduction in supply of those drugs by Big Pharma manufacturers that ‘could jeopardize the genuine patient access’ that Americans currently have by personally importing their medicines from certified online pharmacies in Canada.”
“Erin Fox, a pharmaceutical supply-chain expert and senior pharmacy director at the University of Utah Health, said patients will not begin to save money just because the FDA approved Florida’s plan”, as noted in Politico. He further tells Politico, “‘[t]o me, this is Florida getting to say they [are] doing something to help with high prices, but when it inevitably doesn’t work, they can blame others’”.
And so we repeat what we said in our June 2022 newsletter, “American Pharmacists and Wholesalers Can Import Canadian Drugs: Will This Really Lower High Drug Prices?”:
Putting aside the political grandstanding and gimmickry of wholesale drug importation proposals, for more than two decades, millions of shrewd consumers like you have directly purchased affordable medications for personal use through international and certified Canadian online pharmacies, like NorthWestPharmacy.com. That’s why it is disappointing to many of our customers that so many politicians are chasing these apparently doomed bulk importation schemes while missing out on the opportunity to facilitate what already saves Americans substantial sums of money on their prescription drugs -- personal prescription drug importation. A simple law prohibiting credit card companies like Visa and Mastercard from blocking the ability of Americans to use their credit cards at certified international online pharmacy sites would go a long way to helping Americans to access safe and affordable drugs without the spectre of draining another country’s drug supply which could result in that country blocking America’s access altogether.
